How I Won The Lottery!

Over the past couple weeks all it seems people have talked about is winning the billion dollar Powerball. There have been lines at all the stores, people buying tickets from different stores all across town, offices creating lottery pools (somehow that increases the odds???), it is all the rage. I had a lawyer friend once tell me “you have a better chance of 2 lightning bolts coming through the window and striking you simultaneously in each pupil, than winning the lottery”. When I repeat that quote it is almost always met with the same response, “you can’t win if you don’t play”, never have I heard such a profound statement. I will give credit for one thing, it got people dreaming and that is a good thing. People started talking about how they would spend the money, new cars, houses, travel, charity etc. It was exciting to see the change of their demeanor when the hope of winning was still alive vs the next day upon the discovery they did not have the winning ticket. The excitement that comes with hope literally changes everything.

The “lottery” that I won was somewhat different. My jackpot was discovering my purpose in life, what I am truly meant to do. I know that sounds a little hokey, but it is amazing how many people can’t say the same thing. When I began coaching people professionally I realized this. The basis of my coaching/teaching is 3 questions; what do you want, why do you want it and what are you willing to give to get it? The funny thing is that most of my clients have a hard time getting past the first question. Everyday millions of people live a life of quiet desperation because they are not sure why they are here or what they are meant to do. We walk by them, work next to them, eat with them, socialize with them and live with them, yet we rarely know they are struggling with one of life’s greatest dilemmas. Why? Because they are afraid or ashamed to bring it up in conversation because they feel it is a sign of weakness. This is a paradigm that must be addressed and replaced if you seriously desire to move forward in life. The good news is that I have some answers for you.

It was 26 years ago that I discovered my purpose in life, and although I have strayed to pursue other opportunities, it has never left my thoughts. Your purpose may not come to you all at once, it may be revealed over time. What I mean is, our purpose comes to us as we increase our awareness and consciousness. Think of it like this, you are in a 20 story building on the 6th floor facing east. Your view and perspective is much different than if you were on the 18th floor facing the same direction. The same thing goes with spiritual awareness. In 3John2 the scripture reads “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers”, showing that our material and physical prosperity is secondary to our spiritual prosperity. In other words, the more you grow the more you will know.

Here are a couple tips to help you on your journey:

  1. Be still. In Psalms 46:10 the author tells us “Be still and know that I am God”. What I learn from this is that before I can get to “know” God, his laws and his will, I must first be still. Take time daily to sit and listen to that quiet voice in your spirit, that is the place where God speaks to, it is usually a whisper and rarely a shout.

  2. Delight yourself in God and His ways. Psalms 37:4 tell us “delight thyself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart”. Find a way to work in harmony with God’s laws, have an attitude of gratitude and enjoy the process. This is when He will reveal to you and place the desires in your heart for your future.

  3. Do your best. Ecclesiastes 9:10 lets us know “whatever thy hand finds to do, do it with thy might”. No matter where you are or what you are doing, do it with everything you have and to the best of your ability. By being faithful in what is not your purpose, God will begin to move you in the direction that you are meant to be, it could be that very place that you meet the person that opens the door to your real future.

There is much more that I could discuss, but I hope that this at least helps to start you on your way to discovery. If you are hurting, feeling lost and like there is no meaning to your life, I challenge you…Be Still!
